Are there any other "hobby" players here?

Am I out of my league on Tube Net?

I am wondering if any other amateur tuba players frequent this site. I would rate myself as intermediate in ability, at best, and have never played for money. I have great admiration for those with professional skills. I started tuba in elementary school (1957) and played through high school and college. I also diddled on euphonium and make a rather bad trombone player. On a bass related note I play a Hofner bass guitar.

I play at Tuba Christmas every year, of course, was in a now defunct brass quartet that my church had at Christmas time, and have recently become a tuba player for a local band populated with other retired folk. The music isn't too hard and it is just fun and a little challenging for me.

Just wondering....

Yes, I've gotten back into it after 30 years.

Absolutely not!
+1. From what I've seen, I'd say that probably most of the board's membership are amateurs, students etc. This is probably a reflection on the dearth of professional tuba positions as opposed to amateur/community groups out there.

So, welcome to TubeNet. Pro or not, we're all here because we love playing our tubas. And remember, there is no such thing as a stupid question.

This site is filled with "amateur" players! I have been playing for forty years now and have learned many great things on the site. Also, I have purchased fine equipment from at least two sponsors here as well. Questions that are thought out and well written are given a considerate answer. It would be nice to meet some of these folks in person, however a lot of travel from Western Canada would have to happen for that! Welcome to TubeNet!

Not out of your league at all. Yes, I am a hobby player, playing in a tuba ensemble, adult marching band and a non-audition concert band. I,too, have learned a lot here. I bought both of my tubas from other TubeNet members. I have been able to meet a few folks from the forum, and answer some questions from folks about things in my area.

Welcome!

I started trombone in 1956, bass trombone in 1965 and tuba in 2001. As my byline states I have another method of making a living and have never made more than a few hundred dollars a year from playing. I am definitely an amateur but serious about my playing.

There are professionals who lurk here but rarely post. There are a ton of semi-professional players and lots of pure amateurs, many of whom are at or near professional quality.

And some of us are very rank amateurs. A large TubaChristmas group where we can't be heard is the best!

And I would venture that most amateurs don't post that often, because we tend to be less knowledgeable about the different subjects that pop up.

I rarely post here, but I try to learn from the discussions around here. Let that be a thank you note to those who contribute!
