I use sheet protectors in my binder, it keeps everything nice and smooth.

If the pages are catching, try bigger holes.
Hole punches come in two sizes. I use the larger size for music and pages turn more easily.
I also always punch both sides, I never know when I'd want to have it the other direction later.

I managed an office supply store for a number of years, brand doesn't really matter. What matters are that you get a heavy duty binder to hold up the gigging abuse and if you get a binder over 1-1 1/2 inches, make sure you get a binder with D rings rather than round. I also second the use of sheet protectors.
