I've never heard of Chapstick being bad. But one that I've seen used is DCT. How about Carmex?

dont know about Chapstick weakening your lip, sound a little bit like a wives tale to me.....but have found Berts Beeswax to work best for keeping the lips from getting chapped.

I agree with Jason. I don't believe Chapstick weakens your lips. To me, it is just a bit too waxy to use and play tuba. It also doesn't do much more than present problems. Burt's Beeswax works well for me. I believe it tends to help keep the moisture in. Of course, others will tell you that we need to stay properly hydrated, so we need to drink plenty of water. In fact, I need to go buy some Burt's Beeswax right now.

I picked up a tube of Neosporin LT (Lip Treatment) at Wally's World the other day - seems to being helping with my chapped lips better than the Blistex I've been using. Nice flavor, too!

If you are into "All Natural" get some anhydrous lanolin from the drugstore (you may have to order it through the pharmacist). It makes a great slide lube and works great on chapped skin. OBGYN types recommend it to nursing mothers for cracked nipples, because it works and is edible.
Get your mind out of the gutter!

I just use regular chapstick. I do, however, wipe most of it off before I start playing. As for chapstick making muscle go away, thats ridiculous. There is nothing that can be applied to skin to make you gain/lose muscle.

for me, carmex has been worthless. All it does is make my chapped lips worse. Blistex works okay, but the best I have used is called "lip honey" its got beeswax in it. I dont know where its available really, but apparently they have a website:

All the trumpet players I have ever talked to use burts bees and swear by it, and we all know how crazy trumpet players are about that sort of thing.

Here's what I've heard. Any lip product that contains camphor creates a habit-forming effect. Initially, your lips feel better. The camphor has a drying effect, so as the other lubricants/creams are absorbed or wiped away, the camphor's drying effect makes you need more. What a concept!! Look for a product that contains no camphor or that has it listed near the bottom of the ingredients list. Personally, I'm using Burt's and would never switch. Get the plain one and skip the sunscreen version

I am also a long time chapstick user... I've been hooked since '99. I will say that I have noticed that when I'm on the stick that I feel like I need it all the time and i go nuts if I don't have it. Hmm... sounds like a needy drug to me, but anyhow it has surved its purpose. I've noticed no weakening of muscle tissue or lack of sensation.
I did recently purchase some burts and I'm very happy and will probalby stick with it.
Carmex is no good as far as I'm concerned. I tried it once and it was all tingly and I just didn't like it. I was a bit concerned about the long term medicating of that stuff as well because it's more than just a lip balm.
I will probably always have chapstick around, but burts seems to stay on my lips longer, which I consider to be a plus.

I've been using DCT for some time now, and it's wonderful for any time of year. It has an SPF 20 sunblock, so those long weeks of band camp have been kept bareable. I have some Drum Corps buddies who call it "Drum Corps Treatment". Pick some up today!
