New John Stevens Consortium Commission

Post by Scott Roeder »

Dr. Scott Roeder and Aaron Hynds are excited to announce a commission consortium with our former teacher, John Stevens, with the result being a major multi-movement work for tuba and piano. This will actually be the first major piece that John has written originally for tuba and piano. At this time, John is thinking of writing a 5-movement Suite. His further goal is to write the work so that it functions both as a complete 5-movement piece, but may optionally be broken down into smaller sub-groupings of individual movements for increased programming capabilities. The tentative deadline for the completion of the work is set for early Spring of 2016, after which the work will be available to all consortium members.

The exclusivity deal for this work will last for a total of 2 years from the completion of the work. Per the tentative deadline, that means this work will be the sole property of the consortium from early Spring 2016-early Spring 2018, after which the work will become available for publishing. This 2-year limit was established in part to allow consortium members to program all or part of the work at the 2017 regional tuba-euphonium conferences, and to give more time to premiere the work in general.

Aaron Hynds is lead commissioner for this project, and Dr. Scott Roeder from the University of Texas-Pan American is the co-lead commissioner. Each of us has a single benefit built into the agreement--I will have the right to give the World Premiere of this work (tentatively set for early Spring 2016, at Bowling Green State University), while Dr. Roeder will have the exclusive right to give the only performance of the work at ITEC 2016 (in Knoxville, TN). Beyond those two restrictions, the consortium members have free reign to program the work wherever they would like. The names of each consortium member will be printed in the final score, in recognition of each tubist's contribution.

The consortium is going to be capped at 20 total members with the fee for the consortium set at $500. We would like to have consortium members signed up no later than March 15th, 2015, so there is still some time to fill out the last couple of remaining spots. One-half of the consortium fee ($250) will be due at the contract signing, and the other half will be due upon completion of the work. Payments can be made at the two deadlines or all up-front, and they will be collected either via check or Paypal.

We are incredibly excited for this project, and we both think it will be a great way to honor the work of a tubist and musician that has done so much for our instrument.

Thanks, and if you have any other questions (or would like to join the consortium), don't hesitate to send an email to the following addresses: hyndsa@gmail.com" target="_blank or roedersd@utpa.edu" target="_blank

Hello, everyone!

I would just like to give a quick update on the state of this consortium. We still have a few slots left for interested members, and we will be accepting members until the 15th of March (or until the consortium is filled, which ever comes first). As Dr. Roeder's initial post says, please contact either one of us for more information about the consortium, including financial information. I'm really excited for this project, and the final result is looking to be a major new addition to the tuba repertoire.

Thanks, and feel free to email Dr. Roeder or I with any questions you might have!

We're a little less than a week away from the March 15th enrollment deadline for this new consortium from John Stevens. As of this time, there is only one spot left in the consortium, so please let Dr. Roeder or I know of your interest in enrolling!
