So I am making the switch. I have been a proponent of hard cases for years and not minded hauling my horns around in them. But as luck would have it I bought a new house where harrow stairways make manipulating a case extremely difficult. I have heard great things about Cronkhite and Soundwear but I am curious if anyone has had success with other bags or your thoughts.

Go with Cronkhite all the way. I've owned two, one whenever I had my Willson 3050, they are great!

I am looking at gig bags, too, and agree with the Chronkite recommendation. I did a brief Google search for Soundwear bags, and couldn't find any available for tuba. The largest I could find available were for euphonium.

The only thing I have heard is the zipper can scratch the horn. Any thoughts

The zipper on a Cronkhite bag will only scratch your tuba if you've done something very, very wrong.
My irrational fear with zipper bags is that I'll be walking along, and the zipper will bust open. However, once you see how solidly those bags are built, you quickly realize that ain't going to happen. Maybe it'll wear out in 20 or 30 years, but there's really nothing to worry about.

I will admit I am the king of irrational fears with my horns. I have been having a hard time with this transition to a gig bag with the lack of protection.
