Browsing Just for Brass today and ran across what seems to be a new series of mouthpieces. Anyone have any experience with these?

With model numbers like 4.8, 5.0, 6.5, and 8.8, I wonder just how different these are from a PT-48, PT-50, PT-65, and PT-88. Designed from the ground up...?

I tried some at TMEA. Mr. P saw me trying some MW tubas at the booth with my PT-88 and suggested I try his new ones. They seemed to be modified versions of the PT series, the 8.8 felt like my 88 with a slightly more comfortable rim and maybe a bit shallower. I liked them more than the PT line, but decided on G&W in the end :tuba:

They're very similar to the PT line, the rim is slightly on the sharper side on the MrPs, which in my experience gives a bit more "punch" articulation-wise.

Does this have anything to do with the Buffet buy-out of the B&S factory?

I've just assumed it's a spinoff. However, I am a bit curious why with a lineup of Merp tubas, why they didn't also market a lineup of Merp mouthpieces.

Seems pretty lame that this website gives no info. at all about the size or specs. of any of these mouthpieces
But.........."Mr. P is sure that you'll enjoy playing on whichever one you choose"

Since the mouthpieces were/are not made by B&S, the Besson deal likely had not much to do with it, unless Besson is now making the Mr P line.

According to the MrP website, this information is somewhat less than accurate...
Mr P wrote:The Mr. P Tuba Mouthpieces are designed by Daniel Perantoni, Professor of tuba and euphonium and the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, are available in six different models for bass and contrabass tuba.

I have found the PT line was an overall great sounding mouthpiece, but whenever it came to intonation, it just couldn't match up with my Blokepiece's. Maybe it was just me, but I loved the 88 whenever I was still in marching band, but now that I don't do that anymore, I have no real need for it. They're great sounding, but tuning just isn't there, like on the Blokepiece's.

Remember, that with the Buffet Group buy-out, B&S no longer has the rights to the Perantucci or PT brand. That is why they no longer sell the PT-6, just the B&S 3098. I assume this is the same story with the mouthpieces.

Stupid question, I'm sure, but who does have the rights/sells the pt-6 name/mouthpieces etc?

Wasn't the PT-___ always their branding? Sort of like Hirsbrunners with the HB-___?

Hello everyone,

Just to shed a little light on the subject. Potenza Music is the producer of the new 'Mr. P' series of mouthpieces. These have been designed from the ground up, only retaining the overall 'familiar' sizing that you are used to using.

We're in the process of signing up distributors for the new mouthpieces, and have just finalized our packaging -- but we've had them for sale since TMEA in February. We did a soft-launch at The Midwest Clinic this past December.

We are currently building out a new, informative website with all of the specs, etc. that anyone could want -- but we are still working on it.

We've got the full-line in our Louisville, KY showroom, and soon we will have tester kits in many of the larger universities across the US.

If anyone has any direct questions, they can email the sales email at: sales@potenzamusic.com" target="_blank and we'll be happy to help.

--

As to the other point about trademarking in the US -- Custom Music Corp owns the Perantucci copyright in the United States. Buffet Group attempted to purchase it, but both parties could not come to an agreement. When the instruments come out of the factory, instruments are stenciled 3098 for the US and then stenciled PT-6 for the rest of the world. Same instrument, different stencils.

--

Best,

Pat Stuckemeyer
