I want to buy piston pads and felts, preferably just a bunch in an assortment of thicknesses so I can pick what works. Music store says no way, this ain't Ace Hardware. So what's a good source?

Go to this thread where you can get actual measurements instead of guessing and going through a pile of washers:

And then contact the fellow known as
bloke. He posts here every once in a while, and can fix you up with top quality synthetic washers once you have the correct size.

Thanks guys, Ferrees is the place! Looks like all the special stuff they act like you need "clearance" to buy, you can get there.
Got a cheap borescope and cheap calipers coming in the mail! But I'm not quite getting the measurement system. So you can measuring the distance within the casing to the port, but all these measurements are based on the top of the casing. Haven't you got to account for the valve cap not being the same level as the top of the casing?

Okay, so the upstroke is easy enough. Then there's the downstroke, you have to get the ports right and account for how the top of the valvecap and the finger button work together. If I can work it out it three times and get the same thicknesses I'll consider the nice synth stuff, but I'll probably just get a grabbag.
