Conn Sousaphone Bell ID?

Post by Heavy_Metal »

This had been left in one of my customer's apartments. It looks like it's in decent shape.

The bell flare diameter is 23". The tenon outside diameter is 6", and the offset between the bell flare and the closest edge of the tenon is 10".

On the rear of the tenon is stamped the number 37. There is no letter K, so this may be the year it was made?

Someone painted it white on the inside. The finish under the paint looks like lacquer, but the rear of the bell is what looks like nickel plate.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can tell me what it fits.

With a 6" diameter bell tenon... this would be a run-of-the-mill Conn sousa bell that will fit a pre-1987 14K and numerous other Conn sousas except the 20K, 22K, and a couple of the larger sousa models such as the 48K. The number on the tenon is only a 'build number' so the tenon and collar set could be matched.

Selling, now that I know what it is. I already have a helicon which fits much more easily through the doors in my house.

Thanks to you and Dan.

PM if you're interested, otherwise I'll start a proper thread in the For Sale section.

I wondered about that too. Maybe whoever did that, didn't know what it was.

I have one that looks very similar. It came on a 20J tuba that I bought for the hard cases. It has a 24 inch bell and the tenon and engraving look the same. Someday I need to sell mine off also.

I don't think it's a sousaphone bell. I have a Conn 80J that has that bell and it was made in 1937. It's also without the naked lady on the bell. It the bell for sale? The tenon on the bell is wider than a 20J bell.

So far, the only ones I've seen that are engraved "Sousaphone" are 1926-1927.

On mine, I checked and the tenon is 7 1/4" and it has a stamp "60".
The tenon does not have the groove for the thumb screws like my 20J .
The engraving is the same and the floral pattern is about 20" wide.
The bell is 24"

Frank,
If you are asking me, I have a 20K that I'm trying to repair the twisted off mouth pipe and some other dents. It is not related to the old bell. I had bought a 20J on ebay for the cases and the sousaphone bell was part of the deal. It was with a pretty nice satin silver 20J that I found a lacquered bell for and now my niece is playing that one. The older bell is just gathering dust with no plans. I keep saying that I'll box it up and sell it some day. Looking at the state of my garage, I should do that with a lot of stuff.
I'm guessing that a pair of Benjamins could talk me out of it.

I'd say your niece is off to a good start.
