New piston F tuba clone??

Post by bisontuba »

Hi-
Anybody figure out what piston F tuba Wisemann has cloned? Or is this their own design? Will be at next week's Frankfurt MusickMesse....

Maybe a modified 822? The pistons location look about right to be an 822, but the 5th keeps me at a loss.

Looks like a cut down besson to me. I'm sure it'll be much more in tune than the besson F prototypes...

Yeah, That seems to be an odd choice. Their PT6P copy plays better than the originial. Maybe this will too.

Maybe the lack of Kalison F tubas indicates that won't be too difficult...?

Unless there is some legal reason(which hasn't seemed to be a factor in past cloning), you gotta scratch your head at this choice.petruska, yam 822,gronitz,and why not HB? Would all have built in followings.

I spent some time with this horn at the Musik Messe on Saturday. It wasn't a bad horn. The thumb ring had been jerked around a bunch so it wouldn't stay in one spot but normally would be fully adjustable. The horn had a very usable low end while not being super challenging up high. The C above the staff (middle C) seemed to want to play low to me. I couldn't tell any other pitch problems in that hall (last day and drums were in the same hall this year) but I would want to spend some time with a tuner before I would buy one. The fifth valve linkage was weird. I have never played a horn that had such a long throw for the fifth valve. My hands aren't small and I had a hard time pushing it down all the way. If the thumb ring wasn't broken it might have been better but if I owned that horn I would need to do something about it. The horn wasn't as big as I thought it would be. It looks a bit like my Besson Eb, but every part is about 15% smaller/shorter. If you got one with good pitch and fixed the linkage it wouldn't be a bad horn at all. I didn't catch a price from them but if they aren't too spendy I'd most likely pick one up.

Thank you for the review! Is it as good as the Wisemann 900? I eventually have to buy a CC and F and thought about getting either this new F, Mack PT-10 copy, or the Packer PT-15 copy. I'm more of a piston guy, though, so this is right up my alley around what I would ultimately want. Was the low end better than the PT horns, similar to a yamaha, or was it still like a normal F tuba low end like a PT horn? I really would like to give one of these a try. Did they say when they're going to be available?

Thanks again,
Zac

That having been said, if the Chinese going to steal yet another design, the ones to consider stealing (imo) would be the M-W 2250 and the Mira 1281. I believe I could learn how to play either of those (at least, the "real" versions) in tune without struggling all the time.
Agree 1000%...

I played a 1281 for everything for about a year. The only intonation issue I had was 12 D being a bit high and some low range valve combo compromises. The low range also lost it a bit below low C. C was great, B on down were noticeably different. I ended up playing Bb 124 and push when I really needed a quiet, solid Bb. I don't really have any experience with the 2250. I did play a Firebird near the end of my time with the 1281 and found it a little better in that range.
