After high school I switched from tuba to trumpet and later trombone because I figured these instruments were more in demand for the general
audience.I switched back to tuba when I finally got my hands on one and found tuba to be so much more fun than any other brass instrument.
I now wish I had stuck to tuba and "made 'em like it". My partner,John Reno booked a gig recently,where the customer said "I know you're good,
and we need a band but how much cheaper would it be if you lose the tuba".John insisted it was a package deal including the tuba and told the guy to listen to our website.After the gig the same guy raved the tuba .
"What a hook."said he.

Yep. I sold my tuba in '81 when I changed majors. In 1985, a few years after college, I wanted to get back into some playing. I had played tuba and trombone in my younger days, and for financial reasons I picked up trombone (got a STEAL at a church rummage sale -- a playable Benge 190 for $20 -- couldn't find a tuba for that!) I played trombone almost exclusively for another 15 years, 'til I finally went and bought myself a tuba in 2000. I even got good enough to make a little (very little ) money at it. But through all those years, I always thought of myself as a tuba player who was playing trombone. Whenever the tuba player was out in a group I was playing with, I'd always volunteer to sub.

I've passed the trombone on to my son now. I still blow it from time to time, and I'm toying with buying another good horn so he and I can each have one; but I'll still be a tuba player. It's like alcoholism; once it gets into your blood, you're never really cured.
