This piece was programmed this morning. I kinda turned my nose up a bit at the thought of hearing the Russian State Symphony playing it. I WAS STOOOOOOOOOOOPID. This very well may be the best Nevsky ever laid down. The layering was perfect, the recording picks up every nuance of the score and balances it beautifully. And the tuba playing is great, never too present or too distant. It reminds me of Roger Bobo's playing of the same piece with the LAPO/Previn, just plain solid and musical. The recording engineers have really big ears. Get this, it has the fastest Battle on the Ice ever recorded, coming in a full two minutes ahead of it's nearest competitor. This is a great recording. It is cheap too. It is a Naxos disk (@ $7) #8.555710. Buy it, you'll be blown away!!!!

thanks for the find... looking forward to getting it! Laways nice to hear an orchestra that you otherwise might not...and on top of it all to have them blow you away with their playing!!

I have this: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ ... QC/tubenet one. Don't know any others, but is a great one. Very good low brass (and predominand tuba playing) from both orchestras (LSO/ Nevsky and CSO Scitian suite/ ltn. Kije).

I love the Abbado Recording of the Scythian Suite(one of the handful of recordings I like by the CSO), but have never heard the LSO/Nevsky. I have quite a few, this new one being an instant favorite along with 2. LAPO/Previn(Bobo sounds, well do I have to say it?) and 3. Montreal/Duthoit- a little more reserved in it's bombast, but wonderfully engineered.

Seems I have been tipping my hat in the wrong direction as far as the LAPO/Previn recording goes. Norm Pearson played on that particular recording. No shortage of GREAT tuba playing in the LA area. Kudo's to Mr. Pearson, it is magnificent playing, but would anyone expect less? Not I.

I have to give my nod to the LSO recording with Abbado conducting... by far, no offense Chuck, the best recording on compact disc. It's comes in at just under twice the Naxos one on the Legendary DG recordings line so it's like $12.00. Not as expensive as the usual DG stuff but hey, a deal and a GREAT recording.

I recommend checking it out.

Please don't forget the Reiner recording. This was reportedly one of Mr. Jacobs favorite recordings he did with the orchestra.

Greatest recommendation ever.

Don't be swayed by the time, it is played perfectly and actually makes more sense at that tempo. It also gets us by the Tenor Sax stuff a little quicker, one thing I am eternally happy about.
