Graduate Assistantships

Hi tubenet! I will be graduating from conservatory next spring with a BM in performance and plan on trying to get a graduate assistantship for fall 2016. I have of course done a fair amount of research on my own and will continue to do so as the new school year approaches and applications are due. I thought I might reach out to the wider tuba community as well just to see what y'all have to say.

So do any of you have advice for someone looking to get an assistantship and do you know of any schools with good programs looking for somebody for fall of 2016?

Thank you in advance for your responses.

I'll probably be posting an announcement for a graduate assistantship in late August, but as Russiantuba sez - it won't be a "true" tuba TA. IMHO, that's a good thing. Considering the job prospects for player/teachers, with the growing trend of replacing tenure-track applied faculty at Schools of Music with adjunct faculty, making a living at this is going to get more and more difficult if a college gig is your goal. Ergo, versatility is going to be more and more vital. Moving on from an applied BM to a master's with a different focus like musicology or theory/comp isn't impossible, and a couple of my students have pulled it off and are glad they did. So if you get a chance at an assistantship that isn't just applied and/or requires "other duties" (mine also required recruiting, playing in a faculty quintet and some BS office work) please consider it as a broader opportunity.
