621 saga

Hi,

So, I've got a 621 F and an older 621 Bb. Both great tubas.

I've notices that the older Bb has a smaller receiver - it seems Yamaha changed it sometime in the 80s. I can't just get a new receiver as Yamaha don't supply just the receiver and even if they did it is hard soldered onto the leadpipe apparently - so tough to get off anyway. Would anyone recommend turning down a mouthpiece shank (is that OK to do?) or getting a smaller shank mouthpiece (less choice).

I also assumed that the main tuning slides would be the same: they are not.

Can anyone confirm with a newer 621 Bb that the bore is the same either side of the main tuning slide? On the F it isn't...

Some speedy answers appreciated.

It looks like the Bb and C 621 have the same main tuning slide... Correct?

I've got no answers for the tuning slide question.

Bloke's "Imperial" shank works great with the older receiver. You have a plethora of cups and rims to choose from after that. You should be able to get just the receiver from a Yamaha dealer and swap it out. I had this done, among other things, on my older 621. It works great. Finding a repairman who has ordered from Yamaha before is the trick. Good luck!

I can't get the receiver it seems.

Even if I could, they tell me that it's hard soldered on..

If I remember correctly about the 621 CC which I no longer have, both sides of the main tuning slide were 18.5 mm and the main tuning slide and 4th slide were interchangeable.
