many Tuba players bought their first tuba from Charlie Krauss when he was with Woodwind-BrassWind. It is with great sadness that I report that Charlie passed away this morning. Cancer took his life but his memory is indelibly imprinted on many of us.

I only ever bought accessories through Charlie while he was at WWBW but worked with him a fair amount while he was working with Brook Mays on the Tuba Store venture. While I did not end up ever buying a tuba through Charlie, my dealings with him were always pleasant.

Hate to hear it. I met Mr. Krause in college. He brought the Mirafone Tuba Quartet (All French tuba players) to my school. I got to hang with him and the quartet after their wonderful concert. Our alcohol bill may or may not have been obscenely high. Afterward, he picked up the tab for all our meals and drinks and graciously said that the pleasure was his. No, it was mine. I'm glad to have known him. Rest in peace, Mr. Krause, and thank you for your contributions to the tuba world...

When i moved to Chicago in 1997, Charlie was in South Bend at that time, he helped me out beyond belief and treated me like I was a member of his own family. Over the years, and miles, connections became sparse. However, I always knew that we would have picked up right where we had left off. He was a generous person, a loving family man, and a human being from whom we could all learn something.

I bought two horns from him at WWBW. I'll never forget him encouraging me, in one instance, to buy the less expensive of two f tubas I had narrowed the search to, because it fit my sound better. Really a good guy...
