Air from Air and Bouree, albeit not too long, but about as dark as it gets.

If you really want to be adventurous, and I personally find nothing wrong with this idea but my collegues may, play some of the Bach Sarabandes from the Cello suites down an octave. The D Minor and C Minor (2 and 5 respectively) are wonderful examples of introspective, darker, music. Remember, borrowing was a trademark of Bach.

Good Luck.

Would the 2nd movement of the Gregson work? If you can do it, Triumph of the Demon Gods by John Stevens. Not very melodic, but it is dark and low.
