My school owns this Holton Tuba. Anyone know what model it is? Thanks

I think that's the Harvey Phillips model, not sure if he actually played it... I think Eli Newberger plays one.

Right.

They made them in BBb and CC. Pretty rare these days. I tried one about 15 years ago, and don't remember it at all. How does that one play?

I'd take a Conn 3J or a King 2341 any day before I'd play on a Holton Harvey Phillips model. If they were going for a 3J copy, frankly they missed, and in a big way. Even more so for the 2341.

I tried a CC when they were still available new. It played "ok" at best. Not a total disaster, but not great by any means. Maybe the B-flat version is better? Really, my main recollection of it was that it was an absolute ergonomic nightmare. I also felt that construction quality and fit/finish were not up to par with other offerings at comparable price points. At the time you could buy a 4 valve Holton Harvey Phillips CC (they never did a 5 valve) or a Getzen G-50 for pretty similar money, actually (those Holton's were not cheap). I passed on the Holton, and it seems that most other folks did, too. Conn-Selmer's later offering, the Conn 5xJ tubas blew the Holton Harvey Phillips tuba out of the water and provided what was probably the final nail in the coffin for that model.

There is a poster on here (besides Eli Newberger) who owns and plays a Holton Phillips model CC tuba, and sounds great on it with his group. Can't remember his handle/name though. :?:
