Music That is Good For the Soul on Bach's Birthday

I have always loved Bach's "Goldberg Variations" in it's original form for keyboard. There is something about the piece that speaks to my soul, a very intangible feeling that is best left unexplained. I have the Glenn Gould 1959 version in my rotation permanantly.

Yesterday, I programmed the Aria in an arrangement for string orchestra by Dmitri Sitkovetsky. This is a beautiful disk, the lines are present and the music is propelled by a certain bouyancy that comes from a concerted GROUP effort. This must have been a magical recording session. Although there isn't a tuba in sight, I encourage everyone(my students are required to own the Gould edition) to buy this disk. I just feel better about life in general when I listen to it. It, along with Mr. Gould's recording, will be in my rotation forever.

I can provide the exact label and number tomorrow if anyone should care to have it.

Happy Birthday Mr. Bach. Thank you for giving us the voice of God on Earth.
