Road Trip to Durham, NC

Thursday was a beautiful fall day, we had planned a road trip to Raleigh, and wanted to stop by and see the new Tuba Exchange location. Hoped to see a new light weight, easy to play, Eb. Like so many things my plan was to get a tank of gas and go. My wife took the time to call in advance and found out Tuba Exchange did move but not to Raleigh. She talked with Kevin and he was very helpful in getting us directions and setting up an appointment time to test play a Packer Eb at their new office in Durham. Everyone at Tuba Exchange was very helpful, very welcoming and we had a super visit. They have a lot of inventory and are looking forward to moving again to a permanent location with office and warehouse all in one location in Durham. All are alive and well. I did not purchase this tuba because of #3 below.
Things I learned....1. always call ahead and make an appointment. 2. when looking for a light weight tuba, ask in advance, how much does it weigh inside the case and outside the case. 3. what is the dimension from the bottom bow to the lead pipe? It seems some Eb tubas are very short, made for young players, and a 6 footer like myself ends up holding an 18 pound tuba 4 inches above my thighs. It is a lot easier to rest it on your thighs and have the mouth piece line up with your mouth.
