Huang De Shan

Howdy Folks,
I just wanted to take a moment to announce the passing of a real legend in the Tuba world over here, Mr. Huang De Shan.
Mr. Huang was about the nicest man you could ever meet. He left his hometown of Zhengzhou, Henan Province, at the age of 17 to come to Beijing and try and find work as a tuba player. Little did anyone know that he would become the premiere teacher and pedagogue for every tuba player in the nation by the end of his career. He served as Principal Tuba of the PLA Band for years before becoming the Professor of Tuba at the PLA School of Music. He was the Dean of Chinese tuba playing.
When God made this man, He truly broke the mold. Huang was the consummate professional. Never did he let his stature influence how he treated others, nor did he use it for significant personal gain. He did his job, he educated people, and he treated everyone with the same courtesy and respect one would expect from a great human being.
Mr. Huang was an avid supporter of anything that furthered the progress of the tuba and euphonium. Whenever there was an opportunity to collaborate, he would be the first person to offer support--bar none. He was always giving. He never met anyone with a closed door. He was open and always willing to explore new ideas and methods of teaching and playing: he never stopped being a student.
He is survived by his wife and daughter.
