For some of us who are in the "later movements" of the "symphony of life" we may remember a friend and fine tubaist, Alan Estes. I just received word that Alan passed away early this morning resulting from an inoperable tumor on the brain.

I first met Alan in the 1970s when I happened to buy a tuba from him. We stayed in touch and eventually he played under my baton in the Yankee Brass Band for close to 25 years. Alan was an Eastman grad and also served a hitch in the Coast Guard Band. He loved playing and of course telling stories and talking 'tuba shop."
I will miss him very much as I'm sure also will his many friends.

So sorry...RIP Alan

I'll miss Alan, he's been a long time friend for the past 25 years sitting next to him and playing in Dodworth Saxhorn Band, Capital City Brass Band and Yankee Brass Band. Alan was an outstanding tuba player and it was joy being in a section with him. Our 2014 trip to Maine for Yankee was very special, we had a great time sharing stories, conversation and friendship with Alan and Marti. Alan, I feel very privileged to have known you and to call you a friend. Bobbie and I send our deepest sympathies to Marti and family.

I never knew Alan, but it is sad news nonetheless. Thanks for sharing the kind words to help us know him.

I had the wonderful experience of being in a tuba section with Alan in 1956 at the National Music Camp at Interlochen. He was a very accomplished high school player. Another player in that section was a guy named Roger Bobo, but even in that stratosphere, Alan held his own very well.
