Interesting Horn, What exactly is it...

Watching a few Brass quintet videos I stumbled into this one... (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXTTdqjVExM" target="_blank) I noticed the tuba looks very similar in design to a B&S horn, but it has the extra long slide on the front of it, after looking around for a while I believe it is the new Meinl Weston 45QHS (
http://www.melton-meinl-weston.com/orch ... 45qhs.html" target="_blank) Does anybody have any experience with this horn, or maybe a picture of it with a better view?

That does not look like the 45QHS as it is pictured in the Melton/MW catalog. I do not know what it is, but if it is the QHS, then has been revamped since the most-current catalog.

To me, it looks like the "normal" B&S F tuba (whichever model, they're all pretty similar) with a crazy 5th (or 6th) valve slide. My total guess is that it's the same length as a 4th valve, so you can use the 5th (or 6th) valve to put the horn in C, and then still have a 4-valve tuba.
Someone should ask him.

Again, the tubing on the 1st valve and the 4th when you can see the back of the horn seem very B&S like.

There's an option for "additional 2-tone slide for 5th valve F-Tuba", but this seems kind of long for that (I think?).

So its just an elongated slide? How long would the slide have to be to work as a quint valve?

It would have to be a bit longer than the 1st and 4th valve tubing lengths added together, but not quite as long as 1,2,&4 together.

Yes, this configuration of the standard B&S was tried out by some of Walter Hilgers' former students. Heimann, Tischler (Bavarian Radio Orchestra) and probably a few others. Because the "Hilgers" tubas all featured quint valves (that's what the "Q" in Melton's model names stands for, afaik) and they wanted to resemble this on the B&S. I don't know if this configuration is still in use as I haven't seen it anymore for quite a while.
