Better than presented?

Post by imperialbari »

No relations of mine to this instrument whatsoever, but for a general interest in brass instruments:

http://www.baltimorebrass.net/index.php?cat=5

Last instrument listed under Conn.

Said to have Conn bell and valve block. To me it looks like the top and bottom bows also are from the same Conn, which judged by the top bow solder scar could have been a top action tuba. That would give a better consistency of bore expansion for the last part of the tuba.

Said to have a dependend 5th valve. To mee it looks like that rotor sits in the main bugle right after the main tuning slide. That would be better than a depend valve in many odd pitch situations.

Just speculations from comparing a text and a photo (which I could not link to directly).

FWIW, someone mentioned it before, though not addressing the fifth valve: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=69425&start=12#p568528

Kind of sad, if it is a badly executed cutting.

If the valves are tight, there are many good spares hidden in this instrument. Potential for a redone project.
