A new twist on Bydlo

I just got home from the Kirov Orchestra concert here at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. The program was all Russion music including the Prokofiev 1st Piano Concerto, and Pictures. As I was expecting the tuba player played everything on a rotary valve BBb. When it came time for Bydlo they did something I had never seen.

The 1st trombonist played euph AND the tuba player played the tuba at the same time. I was expecting only tuba or only euph, or maybe even the euph player would play the C# to G# part, but for the opening solo they both played the whole thing. (I think....I was in the last row of the balcony.....GREAT place to hear, but not see)

For the ending solo, they both played togehter again until the G# you have to pick out of thin air....only the euph played played there to the end.

I've heard this piece done so many times, it's sickening. I've heard it on the big tuba, the little tuba, euph, even a bell front euph one time. But I have to admit, this was one of the BEST performances I've ever heard.

With two people playing, neither had to work to make a BIG cresendo leading to where the whole orchestra takes over, and there was more depth and color to the sound than I'm used to hearing. Also, with one person dropping out, the timbre and dynamic change at the end was very cool.

Of course, this orchestra was just plain good, too. The sax player sounded like he was a recording. His sound filled the whole hall and his dynamic contrast was amazing. The bass trombone player sounded like he was taking no prisoners, but he was so musical it was awesome.

I believe Fort Lauderdale was the first stop on their tour. If they are playing near you, go hear them!

Who was the conductor? It was probibly their idea
I assume it was Valeri Gergiev (sp?) conducting?

Too bad they played the Ravel and NOT the Gortchakov - Bydlo would have then knocked you out of your seat when you hear what instrument(s) play it and how fast it is supposed to be in the Gortchakov.

Also...no sax in the Gortchakov (which in my opinion sounds much more like the composer "probably" would have wanted it.)

I got to hear the Gorktchakov when the NY Phil played it. MAN WAS IT GREAT!! :D Such power on the Bydlo and just a great performance. It's really great that they put concerts online. If you haven't checked it out you should.
