Horn is my primary instrument...

If you plan on using it a lot, get a double. Because of the way the harmonic series work on horn as in they are really tight, some notes are tough to hit... for example with an F horn, the middle of the staff C, D and E can all be played open. With the Bb Horn welded on, it makes some of the notes easier to hit.

While I wouldn't know how to evaluate a French Horn if my life depended on it, I can testify that my tuba section mate in community band got a Mack Brass horn (I think the one Tom mentioned in his posting here) over a year ago for her 8th-grade daughter and both of them have been very happy with it. The daughter is playing mostly the 3rd/4th horn part in that community band, showing up every week and for every concert with that horn. She's also been lugging it on and off her school bus, and made 1st horn in her county band. So it can't be too bad.
