If it´s that special a horn, plays well and you´re not paying medical fees: why worry about price ?
I suppose it will have a collector´s value, so I guess it depends on how badly a collector wants it.

Kyle, if it really is serial number 10 (could that "10" be something other than serial number? Strange that an alto horn would be one of the first instruments out the door, but could be...), you'll want to get the instrument covered under your homeowner's insurance. That means getting a professional appraisal. To collectors I'd imagine it would have a pretty high value.

I'm wondering about most of Europe. I've never heard it refer to as anything other than alto in mainland north-west Europe (lets say north of the Pyrenees and west of the old iron curtain)

Stumbled accross this @ the U.S. national music museum. If the horn is indeed from 1876, they might want to hear about it.

I foiund this very early Conn advertisement (You'll need a TIFF reader to look at it, but that should be standard with most OS's now) that describes their offerings of the early 1880's. See if your horn matches the description.

A thought is that "10" on a valve casing may not mean much at all--Conn often numbered casings to identify them. So you can see altos with casings numbered 10 11 12, for example.

Ultimately, the engraving's going to tell much of the story.
