I believe it depends on whether you're in England.

What America and the world needs more than anything, is an "up to snuff - state of the art - in tune" double bell euphonium. Front action, 5 valves, Upright large bell and front facing small bell. Maybe even a detachable " echo" (muted) small bell. Satin silver with gold trim and with fancy engraving on the bell. Maybe Simone Mantia's image on the valve buttons. Now there's somethin' I would sell the cow for.

Given that, I don't think you deserve to have a cow.

There ya go!!! Way back when Franz Streitwieser had his Trumpet Museum in Pennsylvania, he showcased a circular horn (tenor range) that supposedly belonged to the Tsar of Russia. All sorts of fancy engraving and a jewel or two as well. Apparently it was part of a set.

An interesting feature on it was a springloaded rotor/tremelo valve. Wind it up and then play through it as it turned. Very much like the tremelo on a mandolin.

The euphonium bore is too big for a small bell and branches. That's why they all play poorly.

One might think that, but on my Conn (which does have a huge bore), the small bell actually functions better than the large as far as intonation goes. Go figure. I agree there is a compromise, but many of the plain single euphoniums from 100 years ago were not great players either. (flat 2nd & 5th partial and sharp 3rd, 4th & 6th) I think its time to reconsider the double bell euph with the idea that we are producing much better engineered horns today and chances are a very fine double bell might result. If you do a lot of solo work, there are many opportunities to use it. I would not write it off based on poorly engineered antiques.

You don't have 'blatt-weasel' on the list.

Paul, there's a double bell built off a Willson somewhere.
