So, about a week ago i contacted Alan Baer and asked if perhaps I could somehow schedule a private lesson with him near the end of this school year. He replied and said he would, although his schedule is tight. As far as rep. I can bring in, I will have the Plog Sonata for Tuba, Vaughn Williams Concerto, Strauss Nocturno, and Penderecki Capriccio. What orchestral excerpts would I probably be asked to play?

Ask Him?

fwiw, I've never had a lesson with Mr. Baer, and have only ever scheduled one "one-off" lesson with a big name player. I was in Denver for an audition a few weeks ago (didn't get it, so it goes) and contacted Warren Deck. At the outset of the audition I asked what we were to begin with and he replied, "What do you not want them to ask for?" It's going to be an expensive one time lesson, play something that you need the most help on (that you can't help yourself with)

I bet whatever you choose, you will play about 20 bars of it, and that's all... Before he picks apart your technique and fundamentals, and spends the rest of the lesson on that. Sorry, but neither Al nor you should really give a crap about giving a good command performance of anything specific, that's not the reason to be there. Learn the basics and then it's up to you to apply it in the real world.

Or, Meistersinger, the Ride, and all the other usual audition crap. :P

Have fun and don't be nervous. Bears can smell fear from miles away. It'll be a thrill, good on you for making it happen!
