Venting

Post by Steve Marcus »

No, I'm not angry. :-)

If venting valves is supposed to be advantageous, why don't most, if not all, manufacturers do this or at least offer it as an option on new tubas?

Steve,

I like it. Very convenient with only 1 spit valve.

Vented valves will also help with slurs.

Mirafone used to do it as a matter of course, or at least they did it to their CCs -- not sure when that stopped.

Venting has my vote. Even without slide pulling, pressure can build up in a valve circuit and make its presence felt when making that nice quiet fingered slur. I like them all vented. Sure wish they came factory vented.

Is it difficult to un-vent, if you're vented and you don't vant it?

Speak for yourself, my tuba came to me "tuned from the factory."

I live in a cold country. A valve can build up vacuum within a half minute, getting colder with ever second it isn't used. A vented valve means I can cruise on my tuba without the distraction of compensating for popping valves.

I've heard of all of this before and I'm not even sure what is done... is for rotary, piston or both? Where is the hole drilled? A local pro that I took lessons with my first year of college asked if he could do this to my instrument and I was always curious. Mine is still under warranty, so I might not do it quite yet.
