It was refurbish.
Like new.
I must confess that at first it was difficult to learn the Viennese fingering, but after two weeks I realized that there is a very high variety of combinations that leave the horn plays awesome in tune.

I've used a 155 as my main f for about 12 years. I'm assuming some of the idiosyncrasies apply to the 156 as well, but, having never played one, can't be certain. That being said, I've favored mouthpieces that are a bit larger for my 155. The high range is easy and secure, but the lpw end of the horn needs a little help to make it ring. Recently, I purchased a JK3B and it seems to to the job quite well. I've used many other mouthpieces along the way, but they all had compromises that I was, for one reason or another, not willing to live with.
I've never enjoyed playing an instrument as much as my 155, I hope your 156 holds a similar experience for you.

Just wanted to post an old topic where i have put some pictures of a 1938 built Alex 156 fyi (viewtopic.php?f=2&t=53109&start=24" target="_blank" target="_blank, subject: dating an alex).

Bought the tuba 2012 for 1800 €, spend some 200 € on repair but have sold it 2013 for the same money to finance my full conversion to french horns. interestingly i have also ended up with a Knopf Nr. 14 ( compensating double) from the mid 30-ties. there is something special about these old intruments having experienced fairly different instruments. They have a full and warm sound, maybe a little less caring power compared to modern instrument, but a deepth and color of tone which is unsurpassed.
