Advice on a Travel Tuba on a budget.

Post by KevinMadden »

TNFJ:

I'm returning to the cruise life this summer, but as a trombone player! I don't want to spend 8 weeks of the summer without a tuba so I'd like to invest in a travel tuba. My budget for a horn with such limited use is <$1500, so the Meinl Weston is out. The Mack Brass travel horn (~$1200) is currently listed as "unavailable" and is no longer on the front page of their website. Currently on the Ebay are a Wessex Mighty MIdget (CC) at $910, reserve not met, with a buy it now at $1700. There is a Schiller Portermans CC (looks extremely similar to the Wessex, are they the same Chinese horn?) for $1300. and the Schiller 'big-mini' F and Bb for $985 and $935 respectively. I play CC and Eb. What do you think gives me the best bang for my buck, and which will serve me best to keep preparing rep and keep up tuba-chops?

If a BBb will do, how about this one? The price is in your range, and it's surprisingly capable for such a small tuba:

Principal tuba, Bel Air Community Band
Old (early 1900s?) Alexander BBb proto-163
1976 Sonora (B&S 101) 4-rotor BBb
~1904 York 3P BBb Helicon
Old Alex Comp.F, in shop
