Where is the .625 measurement?

I have an ancient 3 valve F tuba that my records state is 16.5mm (.640). It is sort of a toss-up between restorable and scrap, you might be able to scab tubing and crooks from it as well.

If you might be interested in using that I will double check my measurements.

Kanstul contrabass trombones (used to?) have that as one of their valve sizes.

Hello Mark,
I can source you a rotary valve in any of the sizes you mention. For any of the valve makers in eastern Germany this is no problem. In metric it would be, 15.75mm/16.65mm/19mm/19.80mm.

Having installed a lot of 5th valves on various customers' baritones, generally speaking, the main difference will be sound quality. On the small side of the tuning slide, it will be brighter with more focus. On the larger side, it will feel more open and the sound will be finer.

As much as I love Cerveny tubas (personally own a few;) the valves can be somewhat troublesome...

Edit: a little research shows that a 750 valve is NOT easy to locate. Not sure they even exist
You could scrap out a slant-rotor Marzan.

Great to see Jake offering to help source a valve, it's a much better idea to get a new valve from Europe - there are so many choices in size, and they're not that expensive.

can't tell if you're joking or not. Do spare parts for those even exist?
Yeah, I'm joking. I've never heard of anyone offering replacement rotors for those things. However... SOMEONE had to make 'em once upon a time. That was a very common bore for B & M built tubas. Email Meinlschmidt.

As a side-note... I don't know what the current bores are for the St. Pete tubas but the guys at The Tuba Exchange were very helpful a while back and sold me FIVE St. Pete rotors.

Great looking project Mark! I love seeing these "works in progress" posts. Thanks for sharing your process.

I've been considering purchasing some equipment for myself. What do you have?

Very impressive, sir.

Will you be putting a brace between the two parallel legs?

Showing my ignorance ,but I have to ask since I don't know. What would be the purpose of the 5th valve?

Will it be left or right hand operated?

Very cool. So there's no paddle? Just a direct movement on the valve? Very neat.

How about a zoom-out full horn picture?

I didn't even notice the bent brace to accommodate that. Nicely done! What does the hair tie attach to? A little post of some kind?

And I second the motion for a shot of the whole horn. :)
