Conn Geib tuba measurements

Post by bort »

Does anyone know the approximate size of the Conn rotary CC tuba that Fred Geib and Warren Deck used? (Yes, I know who owns it now, and emailed him separately, but I thought it might be fun to discuss it here too. Maybe our friend dasw3 knows something as well?).

I'm referring to this tuba:

Also shown multiple times here:

I've always liked this tuba, and wonder if it could be recreated to modern standards of manufacturing, intonation, and with a one-piece bell. First step would be knowing what the dimensions are, and what other tubas or parts might be similar in size.

So... anyone know any of the specs about this horn?

Something else to consider; though the same body, the horn Mr. Deck is performing on has an Alex valveset. Dunno what the difference in specs were.

This is a 4/4 conn. Take off the valve set and it is probably the same bugle.
Judging from the lengthened tuning slide, I'll make a bet that Conn is also in high pitch. It could possibly be a prime candidate for a CC conversion, along with a rotary valve set.

The engraving on the bell is absolutely beautiful, gold wash and all.

It looks like it might be a fun project, but not at a starting price of $1499 :(

Interesting, thanks! I'm not ina position to by right now, just doing my research. That bell sure is nice though!

Also, thanks for the heads up about the Alexander valves, I had forgotten about that!
