York Eb

Here's my new-old York Eb tuba - a wonderful conversion and restoration job by master-craftsman Bret Gustafson. Thanks also to Mike Johnson for selling me the project!

It's not the usual York Monster body, this has an 18" bell which loved the first time I saw a photo of the body. To me the flare looks organic and "just right". I remember talking to Dan Oberloh when I first bought the horn and he knew the model number and vintage of the horn, perhaps he'll chime in and tell me :-)

Image

It was originally a 3V top action, I don't know the model number. I've looked up the serial number from the original valveset and Horn-u-copia says that corresponds to a York mellophone, so I don't know what's going on there.

It has a valveset from a King Eb sousaphone, and a Meinlschmidt rotor. Bret did some work on the valveset, changing the knuckles on 1st and 4th casings to allow the layout to work comfortably, and then it was shipped to Andersons for Dave to work his magic on the valves.

Unlike some older York the brass is in excellent condition and hasn't had too much buffing. The engraving on the bell was faint from polishing/buffing over the years, so Bret asked Ray Hood (FB - London Engraver) to go over the original lines and restore the engraving. Ray did this all by hand - if you scroll down the London Engraver FB page to 24 April 2015 you'll see photos of him at work. Fabulous work from another master craftsman!

Interestingly, Bret was able to re-bend the original lead-pipe. We decided to make it removable so there's the option of experimenting with other tapers in the future. For the moment I'm just looking forward to playing it!

That's great stuff Cam! I hope you'll enjoy playing that horn as much as I'm enjoying looking at it. Thanks for sharing.

IF we could be so crass as to talk numbers - and we are, I think there's nothing to hide here - what's the total damage for these projects. And what would be the selling rate.

No shame if there's a difference, the final product is so unique and beautiful it isn't really in the realm of commodities. But it would be hugely informative to share. Broken down would be nice too, to interpolate to a non-genuine-York body, or 4 valve, or w/o valve job, or no main tuning tweak. It would be a nice excuse to plug your tech too!

I have to ask, and these are good examples, Is it art or craftsmanship?

Or is the sum greater than the '"parts"?

It was a model 700, I'll send more documentation when I get home from a graduation.

Interesting, I thought the 700 was a Bb tuba?

You're right. I was running out and just looked for 18" bell.
(knock on the head)

It is a 660. Eb, low pitch, 3 valves, top action, 18" bell.
It is also called a "monster" even though the next page in the catalog lists the 19" bell monster Eb.
So they had the 640 Eb (15"), the 660 (18") and the 670 (19 1/2").

If you have access to the catalogue, could you share the page that shows the elusive 660? Thanks!

Thank you, Windshieldbug.

Its interesting that the horn pictured appears to be the 19 1/2" bell horn. I've heard about the smaller (18") bell E flat monster, but I'd never seen one, until Cambrook posted the pictures of his magnificent conversion.

I'd love to get my hands on one, someday.......

Klaus - WSB told me it was 1927.

Mike Johnson bought this tuba from Dillons. He also told me that he's seen one other on Ebay a few years ago, but it was sold by the time he saw it.
