What have you played that you loved?

I loved the Adams 4/4 and the Meinl Weston 3450. Some others too, but I'll leave it at that for now.

You?

I really loved the compact Wilson f. Played great! Wish I had a need for it.
Other horns I liked, but can't be sure due to elephant room conditions:
Wessex berg,gnagey, and wyvern
Packer c and f
Mira pertuska and all the rotor b flats
All the rotor b&s f's from e flat below the staff on up.
Mr p rotor cc and MW ursus
More to try tomorrow

I was pleasantly surprised by Big Mouth Brass's F tubas! Nice even sound, solid intonation. I preferred the smaller bell model; which gave it a little more zing. At their price point, it's a hard deal to top.

Also really liked the Yamaha Bobo Custom F...I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did; but it is really easy to play, very free-blowing.

The only CC in the Willson room was a 5/4 piston. I spent a couple of minutes with it today. Obviously an excellent tuba in many ways. Built like a tank (and heavy as one) as Willsons are. In this environment (a classroom, not the big display room) I thought it was a somewhat unrewarding instrument for the player. You don't get that feeling of driving a sports car some tubas can give you. But I would also bet that it makes noise out in the hall. I can easily see it being perfect in a (much) bigger room, for a player who doesn't need or desire a lot of feedback from the horn. I didn't put a tuner on it.

Thanks... Was curious if they had the smaller piston horn, the 4400. I wish they would make a smaller rotary 4/4 CC. What you describe about the piston 3050 is what most people think. I like my rotary 3050 better than the piston version, but I'd bet that I would like the piston version more than I used to as well. Extremely well made and high quality... I'm a Willson fan now.

After really not liking it at all at first (funky ergonomics for me, for one thing) I went back and spent a little more focused time on the MW Ursus. I experimented with some different ways of holding and playing it, and it began to grow on me. I could imagine being happy with it after a period of adjusting to it.
