The reporter from the LA Times who reported on that rash of tuba thefts in southern California a couple of years ago has gotten seriously interested in the tuba, as a kind of sidebar to his main beat regarding Mexican drug culture and immigration. He was at ITEC and gave a talk to about three or four of us. ("groovlow" was there, and a few others.)
Here's a blog post he wrote about Winston Morris.

In 1996, they had a big brass symposium with all the major brass groups there like the Tubist Universal Brotherhood etc at Cal State Long Beach. From what I remember it failed miserably financially and they never put it on again. I was a freshman at USC and Jim Self asked me to Pick up Winston Morris and Mark Nelson at the airport and drive them all over Southern California while they were here. I remember, I knew Mark was 6' 8" so I borrowed my mom's Lincoln Towncar to pick him up. It was an amazing time, I remember thinking Winston was just one cool dude. I remember being very sad to see the both of them go at the airport at the end.

I don't know about that. No doubt you do. (!)
He did tell me not long ago that he used to be here, but apparently one of Gene Pokorny's recordings came up for discussion and some near-beginner posted about everything that was wrong with it, how it should have been done, etc., and at that point Winston was done.

The First International Tuba Symposium was held at Indiana University in 1973. The West Point Band gave any of the tuba players who wanted to attend administrative leave so five of us went. Harvey Phillips organized it and it was dedicated to the memory of Bill Bell. I wish the organization had left the name as Tubist's Universal Brotherhood Association as it sounds friendly and of course the initials spell tuba. I didn't think it implied that euphonium players or women were not welcome but I guess that's just the way things go.I've never attended an ITEC function and most likely never will as I have all of the equipment I'll ever need and the players I would like to hear are mostly gone. Best wishes to all. Ed
