nothing! woooooooot! (and for that, I mean, I'm on leave. So wooot! for being on vacation.)

Annual Old Dam Community Band picnic and fireworks on Saturday. The crowd was about 4,000. Not bad for a small town! It was an outside concert under our StarStage Canopy. I played a trusty old King 1241 with a recording bell instead of the traditional performance with the Conn 'Jumbo'. Typical July concert...

Wow, same instrument and a very similar program!

We got rained out of the parade- the higher-ups in the band scrubbed our appearance but the town had the parade anyway. Quite a slog from what I understand. So the 20J will have to wait till next year for "National Emblem"

But yesterday, the brass group played an outdoor community service at a Baptist church. I played the Sonora since the Alex is a bit much with this group. We warmed them up with arrangements of "Amazing Grace", "Goin' Home", "Eternal Father" and a medley of "America the Beautiful", "America" and "BATTLE Hymn of the Republic". A junior color guard presented the flag, and our trumpeters played "Call to the Colors", which we followed with "Star-Spangled Banner". Hymns were "America the Beautiful", "America", "God of our Fathers", "Faith of our Fathers" and "BATTLE Hymn of the Republic". We closed with arrangements of "God Bless America" and "Stars and Stripes Forever" (shout-out to Tim "TubaMan" Olt who sold me the latter arrangement). Unfortunately I don't have a picture.

They had a barbecue afterwards at which the Rev told me he wants to do it again next year. Sounds like a plan!

Didn't have any gigs on or around the 4th this year .

A lot of NOLA Brass Band style and jazz standards at a kid's birthday party (well paying gig with great food and adult drinks) on Sunday playing my 1929ish Conn BBb 4 valve Sousaphone. Then this morning played the Redwood City, CA parade for my 38th time, on a York Eb Alto Horn, vintage unknown.

It was easier going on Sunday!

If you were watching Washington’s Fourth of July fireworks outside on Monday night and also happened to catch PBS’s broadcast of “A Capitol Fourth,” you might have noticed something looked…a little off.

The actual weather in Washington was cloudy and misty, making it quite difficult to view the fireworks. But on “A Capitol Fourth,” the annual concert special that airs live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, many of the fireworks (primarily in the second half of the display) looked glorious in a clear sky. Immediately, people started commenting on Twitter:

1812. Indoors, no cannons this year. The Chorale sang during the chorales, but my colleagues didn't allow sonic space for them. Disappointing.

Stars and Stripes, El Capitan, Liberty Bell, Rolling Thunder, God and Country, Armed Forces Salute, and another 15 pieces. This was played on my Hirsbrunner on the BBb part in brass band. It was pretty cool how the fireworks lined up at the end of Stars and Stripes. They started going off (in a fast finale style) right at the start of the final refrain.

Played trad. jazz on my CC Sousaphone for an hour (in 100 degree heat) at the main gate of Dell Diamond before a Round Rock Express game. I don't have any pictures of me playing, but I have this picture from after I played.

Played a windensemble plus rock band concert at Jax Beach ampitheater with my 1934 Martin Mammoth with recording bell(doesn't get anymore American than that Played some marches, The Lone Ranger (the movie orchestra part arrange for band by our trombone player) etc. During the rock band portation lighting struck the amphitheater knocking out power. We played marches(including the thunderer) while power was being restored. It was nice to be able to play without being miced. Power was restored and we played some pieces with rhythm section finishing with Armed forces on Parade and Stars and Stripes while the fireworks were going on. All told between set up at 11am and not getting back till 12am on 5th had a good 13hr day. Still a good day with a nice crowd turnout.
