This is for anyone who has Steven Seward's "Kansas City Dances" CD:

The liner notes indicate that he plays most of the CD on a Rudy Meinl 5/4 CC, but to my aging ears, it sounds like an F tuba. Anybody out there know for sure? Anyone else want to hazard a guess?

Steve Seward uses his big 5/4 Rudy CC for both recordings of the piece (the other being with the Air Force Band on the disc honoring David Holsinger.) I have done the second movement on CC (albeit a 2145), and if I had the chops I would definitely do all three movements on CC. Dr. Holsinger wrote the piece specifically for Mr. Seward, and he wrote it with a big tuba sound in mind. I asked him once about doing it on F tuba and he seemed to prefer it on the big horn, because of all the meaty accented notes below the staff.

I know Steve Seward very well and what the CD lists is accurate: the Holsinger was played on the 5/4 Rudy CC (as was the Mendelssohn!). He is the kind of guy who's upper register is smooth and clear no matter what horn he is playing. It may sound like an F because they placed the mic about a foot directly outside of the bell. He still owns the Rudy, but he is now playing on and HB-50 in the K.C. Symphony
