Any tips on safely removing 'keel' on bottom of tuba?

I do not like the 'keel' on the bottom of my tuba and don't see the use for it. It makes the instrument sit just a tad bit high when I place it on the chair when I play. Is there any easy way to remove these?

Hi,
I've also a keel on my tuba (Melton 200).
However I didn't remove it totally but ground away the sharp part.
Now it's about 10 mm lower and doesn't damage the chair.
Still its protective reason for the bottom bow remains.
Good luck,
Lars

If you knew geometry, you would see why makers integrate the keel in their designs for structural and sonic purposes.
