Any representative recordings of Bydlo out there done on Eb? I've got it in a month and would like to hear some if available.

I heard a GOOD Russian orchestra do it a few years ago in New Haven. The tubist did most of the concert on a King (rented?) but picked up an ordinary little 3-piston Eb for the Bydlo and sounded great. Nothing fancier is needed.

Give it to the bass trombone player and let him worry about it.....

Agreed. I think it sounds better played on a Euphonium, which is closer to the French 'Petite Tuba in C' (Couesnon). But a small Eb should do the job.

The only issue with Bydlo on my Besson is nursing up the pitch of the D# above the staff (and E, to a lesser extent). I've heard that's pretty typical of this model.

Actually, I've played this piece twice, on an old Besson Imperial 4 valve compensating euphonium, with a bass trombone mouthpiece, and it worked extremely well.

I suppose you could play it on an E flat tuba, but unless it's a really small one, you run the risk of giving it the wrong tone color.

As a side note, both times I played it, I got arguments from the (different) bass trombone players, claiming that it belonged to them (hence my first comment). This was easily settled when I pointed out the name of the instrument printed at the top of the page....

If you have access to a Miraphone 5050 euphonium, that would sound really good IMHO. The bore of the M5050 is .610 so really can sound like a tenor tuba. You don't need a high 'B' natural for that solo, but it's the easiest euphonium to get that note.

If Robert Coulter has run through that solo using his tuba, perhaps he will chime in.

I own a 1960s version, but mine falls into the category and it sounds MARVELOUS on that horn.
