Using a practice mute

Post by happyroman »

I found a video by Paul the Trombonist on how to play with a practice mute. He has some really good ideas which I definitely agree with. I recently purchased a Schlipf practice mute from our friend Lee Stofer (who provided excellent customer service, BTW), and quickly discovered many of the same points made in the video. As long as you play at a relatively soft dynamic, and use thick air with low air pressure, things work very well. I also found that when I removed the mute, the notes seemed to jump out of the horn. The mute makes you be as efficient as possible, or it won't work. The efficiency is then transferred to the unmuted instrument in a very positive way.
