The Wessax TC590 CC 5/4 Piston tuba “Wyvern looks interesting. I know this horn is pretty new but I'm just wondering if anyone has got their hands on one and what they thought of it. I have a Conn 56j now but I might look to upgrade to a bigger horn in the future. Also what is it a copy of ?

It is not actually a copy of anything, but an original Wessex Tubas design.

There are only a handful of Wyvern out there so far, but feedback we have received from the lucky buyers has been 100% positive, confirming my own assessment that this is exceptionally good tuba. But I will let them post review themselves if they so wish.

Hands down one of the best horns I have ever had. It has better intonation that my teachers miraphone 1291, bigger sound too. I also like the feel and sound of this tuba more than the wisemann to be honest. Craftsmanship is amazing, solid build, free blowing even register with in tune slots.

And for the price.... Amazing.

I can honestly say you NEED to try this before you go off to put more money down on on some other horn.

I'm not a spokesperson or get paid to say anything about Wessex, but they really nailed on this one.

Does Wessex have video of the Wyvern? I have seen the videos of the EEb models.

I played on one of these when Jonathan and Andy came by my shop a few months ago with several horns. This one was undoubtedly the best playing and sounding 5/4 piston CCs that I've had in my hands.

Tried one while visiting the Wessex showroom this summer for 5 minutes. It is not a good measure for anything really, but I really liked how that horn played. Free blowing and intonation seemed to be really good.

Yes, I did a brief review here about a week ago. A wonderful instrument, and I can say for me, after 50 some years of playing the most enjoyable horn I have ever blown. I particularly like the light response on low notes at pianissimo. There is still plenty of core to the sound, but without that pop or stubborn release of sound. While it is not a BAT (in fact I'm not sure if it is 5/4 or a large 4/4, It really doesn't matter what you call it.) it can produce an enormous sound with a great ambience. Slurring on the instrument is also particularly easy and it is in no way an "air hog." I can even see using it in quintet, be it that the other players have substantial sounds. The low range for me seems to ask for pedal notes, the pedal G below pedal C speaks without any undue effort.

One other thing about the Wessex line of tubas, and this might sound a bit silly, but they include in the case, a cloth covered foam insert for the bell which if my take is correct, is to stabilzed the tuba while it is in the case. I was goofing around and tried playing the horn with that piece in the bell. "Wadda ya know," it makes a great practice mute. My orchestra colleagues love it now when I sit down to warm up and don't blow them off the stage. I've also used it in my town home at 4AM one morning when I couldn't sleep. And of course it stores in the bell.
