Question about Meinl Weston F tuba Receiver

I recently discovered that the receiver on my Meinl Weston F tuba is slightly bigger that the typical euro shank. All my euro shank m'pieces descend 5mm deeper into the receiver before stopping. I purchased this particular tuba from Tommy Johnson in 1993 after he had owned it for a couple of years. He said it was a prototype (for what I think became the rotary version of the 45slp.) It also seems to me that I read on these forums that in those days Warren Deck was working with Meinl Weston on developing an F tuba. Does anybody have any input as to why a bigger receiver ended up on this (or these) tubas?

Could it be that the Meinl Weston receiver is just longer than you are used to seeing? It is the inside gap of the end of the mouthpiece and the beginning of the leadpipe proper that is most important. If your current mouthpieces seat well and you like the way they play on that tuba, then don't give it another thought.
However, it is very possible that they used a larger receiver on that horn. Again, do you like the way it plays?

Oh yeah, I am happy with how it plays. Just curious as to what the theory behind their decision was.

Yes. That is the conclusion I came to after reading Matt's response. That was a good point. Thank you.

The King 2341 receiver is just like that. I originally thought the same as you, before I realized they just added a bunch of mass to the outside, assumably for the same reason people buying megatone mouthpieces and whatnot.

Yep. Thanks Largobone!
