Just saw this really nice tuba on the Matthias Vogt (Leipzig, Germany) Facebook page:
He modified a Cerveny tuba according to a Walter Hilgers design for a customer from Argentina.

Nice! Looks like a nifty lever for the main tuning slide water key, and a lever and spring setup for the thumb valve tuning slide.

Beautiful looking horn. Was it also silver plated as part of this process? The new engraving looks like its plated over.

Yes, silver plating was part of the process, apparently.

From contacts with Mr. Matthias Vogt I learned, that the modifications were rather far-reaching. The basis was an older Cerveny 691-4PX. It got a new Meinlschmidt valveset. Third and fourth bow were replaced through hand made bows according to the specifications of the MW 197; new handmade leadpipe; first bow was widened (with adaptations of the valve entry); new handmade main tuning bow with trigger;finally some overblowing or Vienna keys.
Mr. Vogt apparently has planned more projects of this kind. Interesting to keep an eye on his work... So, thanks again for drawing our attention to him.

I wonder what the cost saving was, even after all this work, over a brand new MW 197?

Looks great. Would be nice to see Cerveny become more popular and legitimized here in the US. Thanks for posting, that's a really nice looking tuba. Wonder if he would make one in CC?

It is my impression that this tuba was less expensive than a MW 197. The work done by Mr. Vogt took some 150 hours, as he told me. Let us estimate that between EUR 8000 and 9000. Silverplating Eur 1000-1500? Value of the original Cerveny a few thousand bucks. The handmade MW 197 starts nowadays from ca. EUR 17.000, as I have understood.

Replacing the existing valveset with Meinlschmidt valves is a huge plus... Seems like a fair price for a (presumably) exceptional horn.

Thanks for the breakdown -- probably what I would have guessed as well. New stuff is expensive!!

And in the case of new production instruments, normally about 1/3 of the price goes to the middlemen between producer and enduser/customer, isn't it?
