A friend contacted me to suggest tuba with organ pieces for a new organ dedication at his church. I've got nothing but I bet some of you do.Good player. All difficulty levels considered. Help!

Oh, man. Am I the only one who was hoping for an epic frankentuba post?

Sorry, Mike. This is a very reasonable request/thread. And I'm of absolutely no help.
Good luck!

How about Schubert's Serenade? I did that on euphonium in our church about 3 years ago with organ.

Hello Mike,
Some suggestions:
* J.S. Bach, Adagio, arr. Walter Hilgers, Editions Marc Reift.
* Tomaso Albinoni, Concerto in d-moll, arr.Walter Hilgers, Editions Marc Reift
* J.S. Bach, Prelude XVII (from Das Wohltemperierte Klavier), arr. Walter Hilgers, Editions Marc Reift.(There are some more of these preludes published by Marc Reift).
* G.F. Haendel, Sonate C-Dur, arr. Walter Hilgers, Editions Marc Reift.

Personnaly I especially like the first and the last.
Perhaps you should look for more at the website of Marc Reift (Switzerland) There are some nice arrangements by Hilgers, and a lot of other usable tuba stuff.

And interesting: * Luigi Cherubini, 2 Sonatas (arr.for French horn by Johannes Wojciekowski).
Good luck,
Hubert

Mike-
If you still have your Yamaha Eb AND if the organ dedication at the Church is not just religious music, check out the Sachse Concertino in Eb for trumpet. Works great on Eb, very flashy little piece, 8-9 minutes. Chris Martin does it on trpt. with organ on YouTube. I have played it on a Saxhorn, but would be terrific on a modern tuba.

If you can put together a BQ, this is worth a listen:

I've played a couple pieces some time ago...

If you are strong up to E above the bass stave, and if sharps don’t cause you problems, then ‘The trumpet shall sound’ from the 3rd part of Handel’s Messiah might be relevant.

Having a trumpet soloist would be brilliant, but not mandatory, if the organ has a good trumpet stop.

I don’t have a vocal score at hand, but as I remember the one I read some 40 years ago, a good organ player should be able to make an acceptable organ setting just about on the fly from the piano reduction in the vocal score.

The solo line acts on its own in some sections, and doubles the bass line in others. Taking it down an octave isn’t a relevant option, as the solo either may go below the bass or play in very close harmonies with the bass in an extremely low range. If the organ plays the bass line in 16' stops only and if you stay loco, then both lines will have nice open spaces to unfold their sound.

The macro form is ABA, which allows for an adaption to the given time frame for your solo, as the BA sections may be omitted without problems with the senses of tonality and form.

Hovhaness's Prayer of Saint Gregory (for trumpet & organ) works quite well on tuba.
