5th valve for Conn 4J

Post by AHynds »

Has anyone done the work to put a 5th valve on a Conn 4J, or its related models (Olds O-99, Conn 2J/3J and 5J)? Thanks to a new bell and branches that I am receiving from the always-helpful Matt Walters, I am in the process of slowly getting my previously out-of-commission 4J back into shape. Just curious about how much work that would be--it'd be nice to have a 5th valve to cover the full chromatic range without too much slide-hand contortion, but it does still play well with the 4 valves. I've done some research about the instrument, and I think I will have the 3rd valve slide shortened when it's in to the shop to have the new bell attached, but beyond that, it plays very well for being a nearly 60 year old instrument!
