So today after a very successful TubaChristmas, including pictures in the paper, I had to usher a Classical Guitar Concert at Marylhurst College. I usually take a flute to play before anyone gets there. The small venue that we use is acoustically perfect. But today I got to take in my 1933 6/4 recording bell York. It was heaven. To make music with others is great, but you need to play "With" them. To have the chance to let yourself go with a beautiful responsive instrument, in a great sounding room, for an hour of uninterrupted musical bliss. It does not get any better.

The first is with my hands up behind a yellow sousaphone in the "Ugliest Tuba" contest. ( I am their Vienna White) The second is a Portrait of me, with my satin silver York. I have the gray beard, rosy cheeks and wire rimed glasses.

The winner of the "Ugliest tuba" is the Civil War era euphonium shown in the first picture.
