York Factory CC advice...

(Not a straight 'for sale' so I put this here on the main board...)

I'm the owner of the 1937 York CC used to model the B&S GR41.

The York was pictured on Rick Denney's site but since then it has had a lot of work done including a CSO style 5th valve and rotten valve-slides etc replaced.

This York has both original upright 19" and larger (23"??) forward bells. It also has the original three York cases.

The horn is perfectly playable as it is and is totally solid but is cosmetically unfinished - requiring a new satin finish and a little tidying to look stock again.

So IF I were to sell, I could put the York up as it is now, or wait and get the finishing done and then think about selling.

So for those who have experience in 'the market', would I likely recover my costs in refinishing if I came to sell? I'd presume the York would attract a certain amount of interest from collectors but I couldn't guess how much and any likely selling figure.

Any advice much appreciated, although perhaps we could keep any financial figures to PM's and EMails - ie. not here on this thread?
Thank-you,
MP

Bloke,

You are right of course. I have spoken with Mr Dan Oberloh about having the tuba finished. He'd send the valves out to Andersons and address any dents prior to plating. Actually though the body of the horn IS dent free - the previous owner (Mike Johnson) had that sorted quite recently. Dan and I didn't talk money as yet but I know it isn't cheap getting things done right - like I know Oberloh does.

I might keep it; who knows?!

So you're suggesting getting the York finished is probably a wise financial move in the longer term?

Cheers,
MP

I think he was suggesting that getting it refinished would probably not be financially worthwhile. The difference between what it would sell for in its current condition vs. refinished is probably less than the cost of the work.

actually neither.

bloke "who has never sold a factory York CC nor had any opportunity to form a personal opinion of the one being discussed"
OK, then let me state it as my opinion. I agree that some people look more to the name and how something looks than how it plays, but I still find it unlikely that one will recover refinishing cost in the sale price of something like this. If you want the work done, go ahead and do it, but don't expect to be able to turn around and recover that plus your cost of the horn in resale unless you paid very little for it.
