Alexander bariton/tenor tuba

Does/did anyone of you play the Alexander 151 Bariton or Tenor Tuba?
I would be curious about a review or some experiences.

(A.o. Hornguys is advertising it.)

I could be wrong about this, but I think the two players of the Vienna Philharmonic use that instrument when they do "Pictures" (Bydlo, of course). If so, check out the new DG/Vienna Phil. recording of "Pictures" with Gustavo Dudamel - the "Bydlo" sounds fabulous. You can test play it at Spotify.

Thanks a lot, Tom. Very helpful. I own a Miraphone Kaiser bariton, which I like very much. Now I am curious to play the Miraphone and the Alexander next to each other. Looking for an opportunity to visit Alexander at Mainz.....

I loved the old Tubenet. You could choose which posts to go look at based on who was posting. The new, "improved" one, does not have that gift. So you may have ended up not knowing whether someone with a world class sound was doing most of the commenting or not. Not meaning to hijack the thread, sorry.

I own a 151 tenor tuba that I purchased from the Horn Guys (it could be the same horn used in their pictures) - Steve Ferguson's write-up is very much accurate. It is a true tenor tuba in that it is configured just like a 5-valve rotary tuba. It has a beautiful sound especially in the middle tenor range. The low range does take a little adjusting to especially if you need to play loud, but it's no more difficult than a typical rotary F tuba. The build quality if fantastic - I view it as functional art. This is one of the qualities that drew me to buy the Alexander 163 CC tuba, and it still functions just as well as when I bought it six years ago.

If that's your only reason to visit Alexander, check ahead. I'll bet they rarely have a 151 just sitting around.
