Is yours the one that was at Baltimore Brass a year or so ago? That's the only other one I know of.

No, mine came from Norm Epley in Louisville. He found it in the corner of the local shrine band room. There was a picture of the band playing it in 1917, so we assume they bought it new.

Well then, there was a big old L&H at BBC a little while ago. Now I can't remember if it was in original condition or if it had been modified. Same basic tuba, though.

Thank you, Bort - Norm has made it a wonderful player. I have always heard the horror stories of 6/4 tuba tuning issues, especially ones that were cut to C. I have found none of these issues in this horn. Having never spent much time playing an American horn, it is taking some time to adjust, because they certainly demand different techniques than German horns. I probably never paid any attention to the one at BBC. Perhaps Mike Lynch got it? I believe the one he owns that Don Harry plays is a Matt Walters creation. Same bugle as mine (as far as I can tell) with a Meinl valveset. They both said it is a monster player.

The L&H Don uses that Mike owns was created by Matt and has a M/W valve set on it. Magnificent horn.

I have a little Chicago Silver Piston Eb Helicon (Lyon and Healy). It's my go-to horn for tuba Christmas.

I have seen identical JW Pepper and Sons horns in my area also. I'm guessing all of these were imported from France. An old JW Pepper Catalog lists their helicon as being manufactured by C. A. Mouchel in France, with German Silver Valves

The Lyon & Healy that was for sale at BBC came from Mike Lynch and he had bought it from me several years ago. He told me that he had another one that was staying in pipeline to get fixed up, but decided to let this one go. The one I sold him came from one of community bands I play with and am on the board of directors. I sold it for the band to raise some money to buy other things. The band had owned it since the 1940's. The valves were very long throw and difficult to use, plus the 4th valve was buggered up. But it really sang in the upper register. I haven't heard who bought it from BBC. I'd kind of like to keep track of it, so if anyone knows or hears something, let me know.
