I have a king cleveland bell front baritone in absolutely terrible cosmetic condition and in reasonable playing condition. It needs a case. I can't justify buying a case for $100 for an instrument that might be worth $75 and that features a vintage, "hand-hammered" bell.
Has anyone here ever tried to make a gig bag? This would indeed be a "dent bag", and you don't have to tell me that I should leave this one to the master craftsmen, because honestly if someone dropped this horn off of a building and didn't tell me I wouldn't know.
I'm thinking of buying some canvas, or maybe using an old down jacket, and lining it with foam, sewing it into a cylinder, and putting a belt on top to close it.

On several occasions on Ebay, vendors would promote military duffel bags as gig bags for tubas. You may be able to locate an old duffel bag at a surplus store and use it as a starting point and modify as you see necessary. These are typically very durable and would like provide a cost effective way to achieve your desired results.

That's about what I'd do...maybe put a circle of plywood on the bottom if you want it bell down, or have one for the top for the converse. I'd put the foam between two layers of cloth, though, because it's not slippery and it could be hard to get the instrument in and out of the bag. I guess I'd use a drawstring instead of a belt. I've seen one person carry an old euph in a bag made just of bluejeans material. It was a carry bag, not a protective bag, and it worked for her.
